Fisher DeBerry was born on June 9, 1938 in Cheraw, South Carolina. While attending Cheraw High School, he lettered in 4 sports and played in the all-state football game. He played college football and baseball at Wofford College. He is most known for being the head coach of the Air Force Academy football team for 23 years and leading the team to 12 bowl games. He won the Western Athletics Conference Coach of the Year three times and was honored with the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award in 1985.
In 1996, he served as president of the American Football Coaches Association and has served as chairman of the ethics committee. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011, his first year of eligibility. Also, he is a member of the Independence Bowl Hall of Fame, Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, and the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame (2002).
He currently helps assists single parent families with the Fisher DeBerry Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization helping pay to send children to sport camps and other activities. He participates in the day-to-day activities of the foundation.
