Dexter Coakley

Dexter Coakley was born and raised in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. He distinguished himself as a formidable linebacker at Appalachian State University, where he played from 1993 to 1996. His collegiate career was marked by exceptional tackling ability and leadership, earning him three consecutive Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year awards, was a three-time First Team All-American, a two-time Buck Buchannan award winner and left Appalachian State as one of the most decorated defensive players in school history, setting records for tackles and defensive excellence that stood for years leading to his number being retired by the school. His collegiate success at Appalachian State got him elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011. He is the first player to receive that honor in Appalachian State program history.

Selected in the third round of the 1997 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, Coakley made an immediate impact as an inside linebacker. Over nine NFL seasons, including stints with the Cowboys and St. Louis Rams, he was recognized for his speed and tackling prowess, which translated into three Pro Bowl appearances and being honored on the PFWA (Pro Football Writers of America) All-Rookie team in 1997. Known for his durability and football intelligence, Coakley became a cornerstone of Dallas’ defensive unit during his tenure, consistently ranking among the team’s top tacklers and defensive leaders.

After retiring from the NFL, Coakley remained dedicated to the sport through coaching and mentorship roles at various levels, including being the linebackers coach at The Oakridge School, assisting young players in developing fundamental skills and character. Coakley’s combined achievements as a player and his ongoing contributions to football and society have earned him a rightful place in South Carolina football history.
