
Todd Ellis, born in Greensboro, NC, has built a legacy in college football as both a standout quarterback and one of the most recognizable voices in South Carolina athletics. As the starting quarterback for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks from 1986–1989, Ellis became one of the most accomplished passers in program history. During his career, he threw for 9,519 yards and set over 20 passing records, establishing himself as one of the premier quarterbacks of his era at South Carolina. Ellis served as team captain in 1989 and helped lead the Gamecocks to bowl appearances in the 1987 Gator Bowl and the 1988 Liberty Bowl. His impact on the field and his place in program history were later recognized with his induction into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 2020.
Following his collegiate career, Ellis was selected in the 1990 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. Ellis transitioned into broadcasting and is the respected voice of South Carolina athletics. Ellis was recently recognized as the best play-by-play announcer in college sports by ESPN. His work in broadcasting also earned him an Honorary Life Membership from the South Carolina Broadcasting Association in 2026.
Ellis, widely recognized as “The Voice of the Gamecocks”, has called some of the most memorable and iconic moments in modern Gamecock football, providing energetic and detailed commentary that has connected generations of fans to the program. His performance on the field and his dedication to telling the story of Gamecock football through sports broadcasting have earned him a rightful place in South Carolina football history.
