Harry Carson, today, ranks as one of the greatest football players ever at SC State University. Carson, a Florence native, was a standout lineman and linebacker for the Bulldogs during an enviable career (1972-75). After his SC State career, Carson went on to fame as a middle linebacker with the New York Giants where he capped his illustrious career by helping the Giants to a Super Bowl XXI title.
The 1976 SCSU graduate became one of four Bulldogs enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame at Canton, Ohio when he was inducted in 2006. A nine-time Pro Bowler during his 13-year NFL career, Carson led the Giants in tackles five times, was a two-time All-NFL selection and was a leader throughout his career. During his playing days (1972-75) at South Carolina State, Carson was a dominant defensive player in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
He started all four seasons for the Bulldogs, the last three under now retired and fellow Class of 2013 Inductee head coach Willie Jeffries, who he remains close ties with today. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
