Jim Stuckey was born in Cayce, South Carolina, and attended Airport High School in West Columbia, where he played both middle linebacker and tight end. He went on to play football at Clemson University from 1976 to 1979, where he transitioned to defensive end. The Clemson coaching staff made him feel valued, and his performance earned him First Team All-ACC honors in 1978 and 1979. In 1979, he was named a First Team All-American. His impressive college career led to him being selected as the 20th overall pick in the first round of the 1980 NFL Draft.

He spent the majority of his professional career with the San Francisco 49ers from 1980 to 1986, playing defensive tackle. During his time with the team, he became part of a Super Bowl-winning squad, capturing titles in Super Bowl XVI and XIX. Notably, in the 1980 NFC Championship against the Dallas Cowboys, his critical fumble recovery with 30 seconds left helped secure the victory and a trip to the Super Bowl. His first year with the 49ers also included two former Clemson teammates, Archie Reese and Dwight Clark.

He completed his playing career with the New York Jets in 1986 before transitioning to a career in real estate. He began working with Kiawah Island Real Estate in 1995 and currently resides in Charleston, South Carolina. He continues to stay associated with his Clemson roots and the football program through his relationship with Coach Dabo Swinney.
